Clinton critiques the Dems

| Former President Bill Clinton said Wednesday that Democrats should have done a better job defending the health reform law in last year’s elections, telling a group of college progressives that the Democrats allowed Republicans to accuse them of cutting Medicare ..

“Then there was, ‘They cut Medicare.’ Remember that one? That’s the most interesting thing of all,” Clinton said. In reality, he said, “what they did was to reduce the amount of increase given to certain Medicare services, particularly the Medicare Advantage program, which is the private company … and used the money to close the doughnut hole for the senior citizen drug program and to add years to the Medicare trust fund. But nobody knew it.”

Clinton said the health care law was one of a series of accomplishments the Democrats could have defended better in the mid-term elections, including the stimulus, the auto industry bailout and the overhaul of financial regulations.

“You’ve got to do more to connect the dots,” Clinton said. Right before the elections, health insurance companies “raised the premiums through the roof. And they said, ‘Oh, we hate to do this … but this Obamacare is so uncertain,” he said
