On Wednesday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk met the head of the Croatian government Jadranka Kosor. The main topic of the talks was Croatia’s upcoming accession to the EU.
– It is of great satisfaction for Poles that Croatia will sign the Treaty of Accession during our Presidency – said the head of the Polish government.
The Prime Minister of Croatia announced that in September the next meeting with the Prime Minister of Poland will be held in Zagreb to discuss the details of the treaty. Donald Tusk in turn proposed that Prime Minister Kosor signed the document in Warsaw, although he emphasised that this will be a matter for further discussion.
– Together with the Prime Minister we also intended to work on the European prospects for the whole region – said Prime Minister Tusk regarding the possible EU membership of the remaining countries in the Western Balkans. – We would like to give a clear signal to the other countries in the region that the European road, i.e. the prospect for joining the European Union, is open.
The Prime Ministers also focused on the fact that one of the last war criminals of the former Yugoslavia, Goran Hadzic, was arrested today. – This shows that the whole region is on the right track to Europe – underlined Prime Minister Tusk.
During the joint lunch of the heads of government they talked about the upcoming accession referendum in Croatia, amongst other issues. Prime Minister Tusk presented the Polish experience of organising this type of referendum and the preceding information campaign.
The Prime Ministers of Poland and Croatia also talked about bilateral cooperation in economic and administrative matters. The Polish government is interested in increasing the number of investors and contracts concluded by Polish companies in Croatia and other countries in the Western Balkans. Both governments also want to develop the cooperation between individual government administrations within the scope of the “twin cooperation” projects. At the meeting it was agreed that in September the governors of Croatia will visit Poland to take, amongst other things, a closer look at the use of European funds.
