The standpoint of the Government of Hungary on the recent proposal of the European Commission:

Frans Timmermans has acknowledged that Brussels intends to apply mandatory resettlement quotas, which are unacceptable. Only the Hungarian people have the right to decide on whom we let into our country – this is not a decision which Brussels may make. Threatening our country with financial penalties is ridiculous and is completely incompatible with the Treaty on the European Union and EU law. Both mandatory resettlement quotas and fines are unacceptable. A referendum in Hungary on this question is necessary, and the Hungarian people must say “no” to the ever more aggressive proposals from Brussels on mandatory resettlement.
